Russian Compound, Jerusalem, "The Guard House"
The Guard House, situated in the heart of Jerusalem in the Russian Compound, boasts a rich history dating back to 1936 to the British mandate period. Originally owned by the Mandatory Prison Service and Palestine Police, the building served a dual purpose as a resting place for guards and as the superintendent's offices or residence. With two entries, one from the east and one from the west, the building was accessible from both inside and outside the prison enclosure.
The building has undergone meticulous conservation efforts and has been thoughtfully integrated into the new Bezalel Academy Campus designed by SANAA architecture office. This preservation endeavor was carried out in close coordination with the Ministry of Defense, the building's owners, and the management of the nearby museum of the underground prisoners, ensuring that the Guard House's historical significance will be appreciated for generations to come.
